Broward District #3 High points Report
The
Broward Model Boat Club held their two day race July 17th & 18th.
According to Mike Campbell the club received 168 race entries making it
one of the largest two day races so far this year. He says that about
100 entries arrived the week of the race making it a challenge to set up
the heats, but he was thrilled with the response. The weather was both
good and bad. It was overcast most of the weekend with a strong breeze
making the heat fairly tolerable. On the other hand, the breeze made for
rough water and cautious racing. Many boats did not finish their heats
and were blown to the far ends of the lake. This made a lot of work for
the retrieve boat operators and slowed up the heats slightly. The CD’s
done a really good job of keeping the race on track and ran heats till
almost 8:00 pm on Saturday. They managed to get 79 heats completed
making it easy to finish up the remaining 49 heats on Sunday by
mid-afternoon. The pace of the race was very good considering the fact
that Garson was CD’ing for the first time, and Carol was keeping score
all weekend. John Manatesta helped CD quite a bit and did a really good
job of keeping things under control. There was one spectacular crash in
the Thunderboat class when John Toft-Neilsen boat was hit on the front
straight and was essentially destroyed. See picture above. The engine,
pipe and radio gear all sunk to the bottom. As of last report John was
able to retrieve his motor and radio gear. The radio is working fine;
however, he was unable to recover the tuned pipe. He has apparently
bought Peter Muller’s Thunderboat as a replacement. As you may recall
Peter’s boat was almost identical to John’s except it had red trim while
John’s was black. All in all, I must commend the reorganized Broward
Club for a great effort they put forth in putting on a good race for the
participants and spectators. Just goes to show what can be done when
everyone pitches in.
